LACUNA COIL INTERVIEW WITH

CRISTINA SCABBIA

DECEMBER 13, 2002

Q:  How long have you been with Lacuna Coil?

**From the beginning, from 1997.

Q:  Are you the only female that’s ever been in the band?

**Yes.

Q:  What do you feel like you bring to the band personally and musically?

** I gave my feminine side, my passion, and my emotions. I gave my personal melodic part to heavy music.

Q:  Has there been any negativity towards you, being a female, in what is typically known as a man’s world?

**It can happens that some frustrated persons say that we are popular because of my image, but they are just annoyed because I can also sing well so I’m doing my job, I’m not just a dolly. They can’t find a better excuse.

Q:  Who is Cristina Scabbia?

**A normal girl who love life, love and music.

Q:  What age were you when you began singing?

**I sung from a lot of years but I started professionally in 1991.

Q:  Is Lacuna Coil the only band you’ve ever been in?

** Yes. Before Lacuna coil I did the tournist for other projects, but I hate to enjoy music alone so I prefer to be in a band.

Q:  Tell us about the new CD, Comalies.  Which I love by the way!  What makes it different from the others?

** The Lacuna’s style is always recognizable.   A mixture between gothic, rock and metal with a modern touch that makes everything different. The big difference is that now everything is more direct, more punchy, avoiding all the useless things that sometimes a band put in a song. We wanted to be simple but intense, and we did it with “Comalies”.

Q:  Have you guys ever been to the states?

**We’ve been in the US in December 2001, with Moonspell. It’s been great!   With a lot of people supporting us and singing our songs. As soon as the tour it’s been so successful we’ll be there again from the 17 of January with Opeth.

Q:  Since I’ve been doing this I realized the old cliché’ “metal is a universal language” is very true.  What is the music scene like in your country of Italy?

** There are a lot of small bands trying to get a deal. I have to say that there are a lot of good musicians. I would love to say that is not true that in Italy we just have power metal à la Rhapsody, we are not the only exception.

Q:  How successful do you feel your previous tours have been?

** Very successful. After every tour we more than doubled the number of copies we sold, and we gain more fans. Plus we met beautiful people from the bands we played with.

Q:  Have you read any reviews on Comalies?

**Yes.

Q:  If so, what’s the vibe you’re getting?

**The reviews all are very, very good, from both press and webzines. People are going crazy for the album and we sold very well. I’m really satisfied.

Q:  What makes LC write the style of music they do?

** We just get inspiration from our hearts, our feelings. I can’t explain it. It’s a personal art we express.

Q:  Have you guys ever been compared with Nightwish?

** Absolutely not!

Q:  Where do you see metal in the future?

** More in the mainstream. Now people is more open mind and don’t just consider anymore metal like “evil”.

Q:  What is the hardest part of being a musician?

** The cold showers in some venues!

Q:  What kind of fan base do you have coming from the US and other countries?

** We have several fans club, but we would like to have just one, controlled by just one person. For us is really difficult to take care about all of them, as soon as we are really busy. We get a lot of mails everyday from US!

Q:  What is the best way to reach the fans?

**To do good music and be always honest with yourself.

Q:  Are you guys on mp3.com?

**Unfortunately yes. I say unfortunately because of course we live with the music. But I also have to say that a lot of people enter in contact with Lacuna coil thanks to Mp3.

Q:  What’s your favorite song to perform?

**Maybe in this last period “Tight rope” and “Daylight dancer”, talking about the live shows.

Q:  On your European tour in 1997 who are some other bands that you played with?

**We signed the deal with Century Media in September 1997, so the only tour we did in 1997 is with Moonspell.

Q:  Who are the writers in the band?

**Marco Coti Zelati, the bass player, is basically the main composer of the music; I’m responsible for the vocal lines and for the lyrics together with Andrea. We always play a lot in the practice room until we find the definitive solution.

Q:  What’s the Lacuna Coil way of recording?

** WE start from the drums and bass, then guitars, then voices and all the arrangements.

Q:  Are you guys on a label right now?

**Of course. Century Media.

Q:  What’s next for you guys?

** The American tour and a lot of gigs for 2003!

Q:  What is the inspiration that you draw from to sing the way you do?

**I don’t know, I’ve never been inspired by anybody but myself.

Q:  If you could work with any producer who would it be and why?

**Devin Townsend.

Q:  Who are some bands you guys would like to work with or tour with?

**We had a lot of fun with several bands: In Flames, Moonspell, Sentenced, Samael, Grip. Inc, Dimmu Borgir, Nevermore.... So many!

I would very much like to thank everyone from Lacuna Coil for putting out such awesome music and I hope we get many more albums like Comalies!!  The floor is yours to say whatever you would like!

** You’re welcome, even if.. the interview was reaaaaallly long!!!
